Trip highlights

  • Absorbing the stunning scenery of classic mountain vistas
  • Experiencing quintessential Swiss alpine villages
  • Following mountain trails to gain view of the Eiger and Jungfrau
  • Soaking up the atmosphere of small gites and refuges surrounded by lofty peaks

A walk through the stunning Bernese Oberland region in Switzerland in the company of families. Introducing younger family members to the delights of alpine walking in a landscape dominated by high peaks, many over 4000m is a truly rewarding experience. The walking route follows a figure of eight from Grindelwald, being the central point, along classic mountain trails to charming mountain refuges. There are numerous highlights as you walk with views from a variety of vantage points of vast glaciers that tumble from some of the highest peaks in Switzerland including the Eiger (3970m) and Jungfrau (4158m). The quality of overnight mountain huts is exceptional as is the nightly cuisine, ensuring you experience traditional Swiss alpine hospitality at its best.

Starting Point:

After meeting at 9am in Grindelwald and packing the donkeys we head off on the first stage of our figure eight walk. A reasonable ascent today, with plenty of time to reach our destination of Waldspitz (1918m), and incredible alpine views surrounding. Relax at the lodge before a typical Swiss dinner. Ascent - 900m

An inspiring walk today as we continue higher, with impressive and up close views of the Wetterhorn (3692m) with its three distinctive peaks. The walk ends at Grosse Scheidegg (1961m), an alpine pass connecting the towns of Grindelwald and Meiringen. Grosse Scheidegg also forms a part of the Alpine Pass Route which traverses the Swiss Alps. Ascent - 300m

The second stage of our walk takes us towards Kleine Scheidegg and the famous peak, the Eiger. We ascend green pastures to the small station of Alpiglen (1616m). Ascent - 700m

Between the peaks of the Eiger (3970m) and the Lauberhorn lies the pass of Kleine Scheidegg (2061m) which can be reached on foot or by the famous Jungfraubahn (mountain train). There are few more impressive views in the whole of the alps, with the giants of the Mönch (or Monk, 4107m) and Jungfrau (4158m) in full view together with massive tumbling glaciers and a multitude of smaller peaks. There is also an option today to continue by train to the Jungfraujoch (3454m) the highest train station in Europe. A special ticket is required and this can be purchased locally. The train takes you through the rock of the Eiger and Mönch to the station where you can ascend further for incredible views down to the Aletsch Glacier and up to the surrounding peaks of the Eiger and the Jungfrau. The kids will enjoy fun in the snow skiing, sledding or taking the zip line (additional charge applies). Ascent - 400 m

A short walk today takes us to a balcony at Wengen and from here it is possible to continue to Männlichen (2343m) with views to the lake of Thun, Brienz and right in the middle Interlaken. Ascent - 200 m

This trip is graded moderate and includes daily walks of 2.5 to 5 hours. There are many sections of the trail which require care. The accent is on keeping a steady pace with time to stop and take photos (subject to weather conditions). You will need a reasonable level of fitness to participate fully in this adventure. To prepare your children for this trip we recommend undertaking extended walks in your local area preferably over undulating terrain. At any time during summer, weather conditions may be variable and you should be prepared for all conditions including snow, ice, strong sun and extreme winds. Adverse conditions can make the walk more challenging. As with all our moderate programs, we expect participants to be regular outdoors people, enjoying aerobic sport around three to four times a week over some period of time. Preferably this has been a long term interest but if not, you have set a program of fitness preparation with at least three months lead in time to your trip. The fitter you are for your trip, the more of a holiday it will be.
