About Accommodation

The 'inns' & outs about where you'll stay

Throughout our walking and cycling holidays in the UK & Europe, you will be staying in carefully selected accommodation that compliment the style of your trip. These are generally locally owned and operated properties giving you the opportunity to experience the local charm of the villages that you are staying in. For example, when you travel with us on the Coast to Coast you will be staying with several B&B owners that we have been connected with for over 20 years and we find that it is the personal touches they provide that will make your stay more enjoyable.

Depending on the trip that you choose, we use a mixture of B&B’s, small hotels, chalets, inns and auberges. The majority of the properties you'll be staying at have en-suite facilities and daily breakfasts are included. You do not need to bring any towels or linen, all are provided. Below is just a sample of some of the properties we use to give you a better idea of what to expect when travelling with Walkers' Britain.

Bed & Breakfasts (B&Bs)

A B&B is usually a small property and often someone’s home. The rooms are mostly en-suite, however some properties we offer will have a separate bathroom for private use or a shared bathroom with one other room. Most bathrooms will have showers only and not a bath. A full hot English breakfast is included but generally, they do not offer other meals.

Stonehouse Farm, St. Bees

Stonehouse Farm in St. Bees is located at the starting point for the Coast to Coast Trail across England. It is a friendly family-run bed and breakfast in a large modernised Georgian farmhouse. They have six bedrooms and a small cottage.  It is also a family home and working farm. The Smith Family lamb 250 ewes and have a small pedigree flock called the Whineray flock and also have their own ponies.

All rooms are en-suite, there is free wi-fi and you are 30 metres from the railway station. Shops & pubs are nearby.  For the first day of your Coast to Coast walk, you will start with a full cooked English breakfast.

The Villa, Robin Hood's Bay

Built in 1892, The Villa is an elegantly refurbished guesthouse. Each room is en-suite and has beautiful countryside views and the B&B is located close to the sea and local shops. All rooms are beautifully furnished and retain many original features including servants bells and cast iron fireplaces, as well as  tv/dvd players, tea/coffee making facilities, small guest lounge and full English breakfasts.

Country pubs & inns

When walking in the UK, often the local village pub also provides accommodation. Staying in the pub gives you an authentic local experience. Often the pub serves local beers and cook with local produce if they have a restaurant attached.  Some of the pubs you stay were built in the 17th & 18th century so rooms will be of varying sizes, some with exposed beams and slanting roofs.

The Shepherds Arms, Ennerdale Bridge

The Shepherds Arms is a well-known landmark at the centre of Ennerdale Bridge. An old village-centre farm, the property is a comfortable and friendly destination in the Lakeland tradition, offering visitors good food and good ales in the company of convivial locals. Their bar and dining menus emphasise local produce and traditional home cooking, and they stock a range of real ales from around Cumbria. They have eight bedrooms including twin and double rooms, all en-suite or with private bathrooms. All rooms in this inn are equipped with tv and radio, hot drinks, telephone and toiletries, and, except in one mysteriously impenetrable room, there is free wi-fi throughout the property.

Old Success Inn, Sennen Cove

Situated on one of West Cornwall's most stunning bays, the Old Success is a 17th Century fishermen's inn, which has been transformed to offer a bar and restaurant as well as comfortable, modern bedrooms. Many of these rooms boast views of the rugged Cornish coast and Atlantic Ocean. With clear blue sea and fine sands, Sennen Cove is a breathtakingly beautiful location. The inn has 12 bedrooms all are en-suite except for the single room which has private facilities opposite. All rooms have tv, tea/coffee making facilities and hair dryers.

Hotels

Many of the hotels that you'll be staying at during your Walkers' Britain trip are locally run and owned and rarely part of a large international chain. They offer their own local charm and you may find rooms of varying size and standard throughout your tour. In Europe, it is not standard to have tea/coffee making facilities in the room and not all rooms will have hair dryers or ironing boards. We generally stay in 3-star properties, however please note that due to the location of many of our remote walks we offer the best available in the region.

The Residence, Amalfi

Converted into a hotel in the '50s and completely renovated in 2010, the hotel has 27 different rooms equipped with balcony or terrace overlooking the sea or on the Piazza Duomo with its Cathedral dedicated to the Apostle Andrew. In Italy you generally will have a cold breakfast buffet to start your day including fresh pastry, cheeses, fruits and cold cuts from local producers.

Hotel Bayerischer Hof, Starnberg

In 1880 Hotel Bayerischer was built as a house by Leo von Klenze who became a court architect for King Ludwig I. The hotel  in Bavaria was restored in 2004 but it kept many of its original features. The coal cellar now serves as a Taverna and the cold store behind the hotel was formerly the icehouse, where they collected ice blocks directly from the river. The hotel has 32 rooms of different sizes and different styles. All rooms are en-suite with hair dryer, tv and telephone. Free wi-fi is also available.

Auberges

Generally found in the Alps, an auberge offers a combination of basic twin rooms and dormitories. Often the rooms will have shared bathroom facilities and you should expect very basic amenities.

Auberge du Mont Blanc, Trient

Trient on the Tour du Mont Blanc route is a small mountain village with a population of around 200. These numbers swell in the walking season as Trient is a popular stop on this walk. The auberge has 22 basic bedrooms with shared bathroom room facilities and 80 places in their dormitories so can accommodate large numbers of walkers. Attached to the Auberge is a small supermarket for snacks and drinks and they also have a bar with various local beers on tap to sample.
