UK & EUROPE HEATWAVE - 23 June, 2026

Many regions across Europe and the UK are currently experiencing unusually high temperatures, with heatwave conditions affecting parts of Southern and Central Europe. Travellers should be prepared for hot weather and take sensible precautions to stay safe and comfortable while enjoying their trip.

What to Expect

Temperatures may exceed seasonal averages, particularly in destinations such as Spain, Portugal, Italy, UK, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Greece, Croatia and parts of the Balkans. Sightseeing, walking and cycling activities can feel significantly more demanding during periods of extreme heat.

Staying Safe and Comfortable

Stay hydrated

  • Carry a water bottle and drink regularly throughout the day.
  • Don't wait until you feel thirsty before drinking water.
  • Consider electrolyte supplements during particularly hot days or when undertaking active excursions.

Dress appropriately

  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in light colours.
  • Choose breathable fabrics where possible.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.

Use sun protection

  • Apply sunscreen regularly, particularly during outdoor activities.
  • Reapply after swimming or heavy perspiration.

Plan around the heat

  • Where possible, undertake walking or cycling during the cooler morning hours. Make early starts, ask your accommodation for the possibility of a packed breakfast.
  • Take advantage of shade and air-conditioned venues during the hottest part of the day, typically between 12pm and 4pm.
  • Allow extra time for activities and take regular breaks.

Monitor your wellbeing

  • Be aware of signs of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, headache, nausea, unusual fatigue or excessive sweating.
  • If symptoms occur, move to a cool place, hydrate and seek medical assistance if required.

Accommodation

  • Not all accommodation, particularly historic hotels, guesthouses and rural properties, have air conditioning. This is common in many destinations and should be expected. Ask your hosts if they have a fan that can be put in your room. Use wet face towels to cool yourself.

When Walking or Cycling

If you are participating in a walking or cycling holiday:

  • Start each day well hydrated.
  • Carry additional water and snacks.
  • Reduce your pace during hotter periods.
  • Follow local advice from guides, trip leaders or route notes.
  • Be prepared to adjust plans if local authorities issue heat-related warnings.

Local Conditions

Weather conditions can change rapidly. We recommend monitoring local forecasts, including the potential of forest fires and following any guidance issued by local authorities during your travels.

We wish all travellers a safe and enjoyable journey and encourage everyone to take extra care during periods of extreme heat.

Middle East Update - 2 March, 2026

Walkers' Britain & Europe is monitoring events in the Middle East. As a result of the unfolding conflict, there are travel disruptions within the region and globally, including airspace closures and flight cancellations.

As the situation remains very fluid, travellers should check with their airlines for any updates regarding potential flight disruptions and ensure they follow their own government's travel advisories. The safety of our travellers is always our top priority and will never be compromised.

If you are unable to join your trip due to flight cancellations related to the unrest in the Middle East, please contact our team to discuss the options available to you.
