The Turku Archipelago is one of Finland’s most breathtaking natural wonders — a chain of some 20,000 islands stretching out into the Baltic Sea from the historic city of Turku in the southwest. Exploring this magical region by bike is both easy and rewarding, thanks to the excellent network of local ferries linking the islands. Picture yourself cycling quiet country lanes through rural Finland, pausing at traditional harbour villages, and enjoying the fresh sea air and wholesome Finnish cuisine. Along the way, you’ll discover tranquil forests, sweeping sea views, and the charm of the inner islands. Your journey begins and ends in Turku, Finland’s oldest city, where a leisurely ride reveals its medieval castle, cathedral, and scenic riverside paths. This is island-hopping with a difference, enjoy the unique pleasure of hopping between the small islands off Finland's southwest coast.

Turku

Make your own way to Turku, a lively harbour city on Finland’s south-west coast. Compact and easy to explore on foot, Turku blends medieval heritage with a relaxed riverside atmosphere. You may wish to visit Turku Castle, dating from the late 13th century, or the impressive cathedral before enjoying dinner along the Aura River, where cafés and restaurants spill onto the waterfront in the warmer months.

After breakfast, collect your bike and panniers and set off from the city using Turku’s well-developed cycle lanes. The urban landscape gradually gives way to open countryside and glimpses of the Baltic Sea as you ride south-east toward the archipelago. A short local ferry transports you onto one of your first islands. Quiet roads, traditional wooden houses and expansive sea views accompany you as you continue to Nauvo, a charming harbour village with cafés and small marina. Overnight stay by the coast on Nauvo.

Today you ride deeper into the Turku Archipelago, one of the largest island networks in the world. A choice of suggested routes allows you to tailor the day - either a more direct option or a slightly longer variation to explore additional shoreline and villages. Short ferry crossings connect the islands, adding variety and giving you time to relax and take in the open seascapes. The riding is on quiet tarmac roads with gentle undulations. You reach Houtskär, a small island community known for its red granite shores and peaceful atmosphere. This evening a lovely dinner is included at your hotel, showcasing local seasonal ingredients.

Meals:  B,D

A relaxed day in terms of distance, with a scenic ferry transfer linking the islands but you can extend your cycling with optional loops suggested in your route notes if you are keen to explore further. The landscape continues to shift between rocky shoreline, forest and open farmland, with wide sea views throughout. Korpo offers a welcoming harbour setting and a strong maritime character. Tonight you are treated to a multi-course tasting menu prepared by a leading local chef - a highlight of the trip and a celebration of regional produce. Overnight stay on Korpo island.

Meals:  B,D

Return to Nauvo before taking a ferry north back to the mainland. From here you continue along quiet backroads toward Naantali, one of Finland’s most picturesque harbour towns. Cobbled streets, pastel-coloured wooden houses and a lively waterfront create a distinctly different atmosphere from the remote islands. This idyllic seaside town has long been known as a spa and holiday destination, first established around its 15th-century convent and later developed into a popular retreat for Finnish high society. The waterfront is a wonderful place to stroll and soak up the atmosphere. Your overnight stay is in the Old Town, with plenty of inviting restaurants close at hand for dinner.

Meals:  B

This morning you can either lingering in Naantali or return early to Turku, as the ride today is relatively short. In Naantali, options include a harbour boat trip or exploring the Convent Church and nearby nature trails. On arrival back in Turku, return your bicycles and take the afternoon to discover more of Finland’s oldest city. You might like to tour the medieval Turku Castle, climb the cathedral tower, visit one of the city’s excellent museums such as the Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova, or stroll along the Aura River to see the historic sailing ships moored there. For a more relaxing option, enjoy shopping for local crafts or sampling regional delicacies in the city’s markets. Overnight stay in central Turku.
