From Porto, make your way by train to Pinhão in the heart of the Douro Valley. We will arrange a private transfer from the airport in Porto (or your Porto hotel if arriving in advance) to Campanha train station from where you can can travel directly to the Douro Valley. Trains run throughout the day and the journey takes around 2 to 2.5 hours. It’s a scenic journey as the train follows the Douro River as it tracks into Northern Portugal’s hinterland. Tickets (not included) are low cost, and you can choose to travel at a time that suits you. Further information about this journey will be given when you book so you can arrive worry-free. On arrival in Pinhão, which sits on a bend in the Douro that is home to some of the oldest wine estates in the area, a private and pre-arranged transfer driver will escort you to your boutique hotel in the small town of Alijó. Settle in and prepare for the adventure ahead. Accommodation: Two nights in a 4-star hotel in Alijó with outdoor swimming pool.

Check out of your hotel in Alijó and take the trail to Pinhão. The route along the edge of the Douro wine region follows vineyard trails and country lanes along hilltops to Casal de Loivos before descending to the Douro River at Pinhão. Savour the magnificent views of the valley with its banks carpeted by vineyards and small olive groves. It is this special landscape, unique to the Douro, that led UNESCO to assign the area recognition and protection. Visit the Quintas to learn more about the history and production of port wine and to enjoy some tastings of the surprising number of port styles and vintages. Full information on Quinta visits will be provided when you book. Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable 3 star hotel in Pinhão.

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before your private transfer north to the Peneda-Gerês National Park and the remote village of Castro Laboreiro, your base for the next 2 days. The journey (approx 3 hrs) is very scenic as the road journeys inland and winds up into the Portuguese mountains close to the Spanish border. Peneda-Gerês is Portugal’s only national park and one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. Set in the rugged far north, it’s a landscape of granite mountains, deep valleys, ancient oak forests, and traditional stone villages where centuries-old farming practices still shape daily life. Deposit your luggage at the hotel and get ready for a short hike. Walk directly from the village out into the mountains to visit the promontory and the ruined castle at Castro Labreiro. Sittting at just over 1000m/3280ft above sea level, this site was first fortified in the middle ages. Visit the small museum on your return to learn about the culture and traditions of this remote community as youe njoy the extensive views and the slow pace of life in this sleepy mountain village. Accommodation: Two nights in a small family-run 3-star hotel in the village.

Meals:  B

After breakfast, walk directly from the village out into the mountains with their distinctive rock formations. Descending from the village, you will reach a pleasant wooded valley where moss and lichens grow on the trees in the clear mountain air. Cross an ancient bridge and bathe your feet in the river. Enjoy the shade of the trees and the sound of the stream as you climb steadily uphill again to the plateau of smooth granite boulders. Enjoy the sweeping views across the valley to other hills, valleys and ridges before returning to Castro Laboreiro. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant in this small mountain village. A packed lunch is also included on this day.

Meals:  B,L

Today you will cross the rocky highlands to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Peneda, a pilgrimage site for local people for centuries. Set off out into the rocky mountain plateau. The trail passes through the Lamas do Mouro Park Gate as you descend into the forest to follow trails used for centuries by pilgrims down to the Sanctuary. The site of the Sanctuary (a large church) is dramatic, sitting at the bottom of a huge rock buttress in the remote Peneda Valley, blending spiritual heritage with natural beauty. Built between the 18th and 19th centuries, it honours a 13th-century apparition of the Virgin Mary to a shepherd girl and has since become a significant pilgrimage site, especially during the annual September festival. Your private transfer driver will meet with you here to escort you to the charming small town of Vila Nova de Cerveira in the Atlantic coastal area of the Minho, so named for the river that flows into the sea. After settling into your hotel, enjoy a stroll around the historical centre. The town has an active arts scene and hosts a biennial arts festival. Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable hotel.

Meals:  B,L

Check out of your hotel and begin your walk along the banks of the River Minho, a scenic trail that hugs the northern border of Portugal, with Spain just across the water. The path is mostly flat and easy-going, winding past small farms, riverside chapels, and traditional granite villages. Enjoy expansive views of the river estuary and Galicia’s wooded hills across the border. Continue to the historic town of Caminha, where the Minho River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Here, you can explore the beautiful 15th-century Igreja Matriz (Gothic parish church) and admire the old defensive towers and ramparts. Take a break in the lively main square, surrounded by Renaissance and Baroque buildings, and enjoy a coffee and a freshly baked pastel de nata beside the 16th-century fountain. From Caminha, the route turns west toward the coast, passing through sweet-smelling pine forest and low dunes. Soon you’ll reach Moledo beach, a popular summer spot with wide sands and views of Spain’s Monte Santa Tecla across the estuary. The trail then follows a well-maintained boardwalk and coastal path that runs just above the rocky shore, offering refreshing sea breezes and ocean views. Your walk ends in the fishing village and relaxed seaside town of Vila Praia de Âncora, known for its broad beach, working harbour, and excellent seafood. Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable 4-star hotel near the sea in Vila Praia de Âncora.

Meals:  B

Today’s walk is a scenic coastal walk to the elegant city of Viana do Castelo. Begin by crossing the wide, sandy beach of Vila Praia de Âncora, with sweeping Atlantic views and the sound of waves. The route briefly heads inland, winding through patches of pine forest, small farms, and quiet rural paths, before rejoining the coastline. Follow the rugged shore southward, passing traditional stone windmills, fishing villages, and remnants of coastal fortresses that once guarded this wild stretch of the Atlantic. The terrain is mostly level and easy underfoot, with long stretches of boardwalk and coastal trail offering fresh sea breezes and uninterrupted ocean views. Arriving in Viana do Castelo, one of northern Portugal’s most beautiful towns, you'll stroll through its elegant historic centre—full of leafy squares, ornate churches, and tiled façades—on your way to your hotel. Accommodation: Overnight in a comfortable 4-star hotel in town.

Meals:  B

Tour arrangements end after breakfast. To return to Porto, board a direct train or bus from the town centre —a comfortable and scenic journey of around two hours (train fare low cost and payable locally). Please speak to a member of our team when you book should you wish to arrange additional nights’ accommodation to explore Porto, one of Europe's most interesting cities. Wander the cobbled streets of the Ribeira district, browse local markets and artisan shops, or enjoy a tasting tour in the famous port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river. Frequently Asked Questions

This trip brings together the very best of northern Portugal in one unforgettable walking holiday. You’ll experience the highlights of the region—from the world-renowned terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley to the wild mountain landscapes of Peneda-Gerês National Park, and the unspoiled beaches and fishing villages of the Atlantic coast. Enjoy scenic walks through diverse terrain, sample port at traditional quintas, hike ancient trails through remote villages, and breathe in the fresh sea air as you follow coastal paths. It’s the perfect mix of nature, culture, and cuisine—carefully curated to showcase the most beautiful and authentic corners of northern Portugal. With the freedom of a self-guided format and the option to start or end in the vibrant city of Porto, this is the ultimate way to discover the best bits of the region on foot..

Northern Portugal offers a rich and varied culinary experience shaped by its landscapes—from vineyards to mountains to the sea.

In the Douro Valley, expect traditional dishes like posta mirandesa (grilled beef), feijoada (bean stew), and, of course, Port wine, which you can sample at historic quintas overlooking the river. The region also produces excellent dry reds and whites under the Douro DOC label.

In the Peneda-Gerês mountains, the food is hearty and rustic—think smoked sausages, slow-cooked goat or lamb, and cornbread (broa). Meals are often accompanied by local vinho verde tinto, a lightly sparkling red wine unique to northern Portugal.

Along the Atlantic coast, you’ll find some of the freshest seafood in the country. Try grilled sardines, arroz de marisco (seafood rice), and polvo à lagareiro (octopus with olive oil and garlic), paired with crisp white vinho verde and sweeping ocean views.

Wherever you go, meals are simple, generous, and full of flavour—perfect after a day on the trail.

Absolutely! To get to Pinhao and from the end of the trip in Viana do Castelo, you will likely to have to transit through Porto. This makes it easy to add extra nights to explore this vibrant riverside city. We highly recommend taking some time to discover Porto’s historic centre, stroll along the Douro waterfront, and visit the famous wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia for a port tasting. You can also enjoy the city’s lively food scene, colourful tiled buildings, and iconic landmarks like the Clérigos Tower and Livraria Lello. Just let us know, and we’ll be happy to help arrange extra nights before or after your trip.

Peneda-Gerês National Park is located in the far north of Portugal, near the border with Spain, spanning the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, and Vila Real. It stretches across the rugged granite mountains of Peneda, Soajo, Amarela, and Gerês, forming a dramatic landscape of forests, rivers, and remote valleys. As Portugal’s only national park, it’s a protected area rich in biodiversity, traditional stone villages, and ancient trails, including sections of old Roman roads. The town of Gerês serves as a common gateway for visitors exploring the park.

The Peneda-Gerês area is Portugal's only national park, offering a blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Hikers can traverse ancient Roman roads, explore mossy forests, and encounter wildlife such as the elusive Iberian wolf. The park's landscapes include granite peaks, waterfalls, and traditional villages, providing a rich and varied hiking experience. As a less well-known walking destination you are assured quiet trails and a warm welcome from the local people. The quality of the hiking trails is excellent - they are well waymarked, traverse through a pristine natural environment, afford great landscape views alongside peace and tranquility.

You can travel to Pinhão by train from Porto Campanhã station, the city's main rail terminal. The journey takes around 2.5 hours and usually involves one easy change at Régua. Trains typically run 4 to 6 times per day, depending on the season and day of the week. The route follows the scenic Douro line, with stunning river views—especially between Régua and Pinhão. For the best scenery, sit on the right-hand side (facing forward). Fares are very affordable, starting from around €9–12 one way and there is a 50% discount if you are aged over 65. You don’t need to book far in advance, but checking the schedule ahead of time is recommended. You can view timetables and purchase tickets online at: www.cp.pt (Comboios de Portugal – the official railway service). Note that it's advisable to take a train earlier in the day to avoid arriving late at your overnight accommodation in Alijo.

This trip keeps things low-impact with some travel by foot and train—two of the most sustainable ways to explore a region. You'll walk scenic trails through natural and cultural landscapes, and use public transport instead of private transfers. By visiting quieter rural areas like Peneda-Geres and supporting local food and traditions, the trip helps spread the benefits of tourism while treading lightly on the environment.
