About the Sheep's Head Way

Walking the Sheep’s Head Way takes you to the far southwest of Ireland, where a narrow peninsula reaches into the Atlantic and life moves at a gentler pace. Starting and finishing in the harbour town of Bantry, the route follows the best sections of this well-marked coastal trail through one of West Cork’s most unspoilt landscapes. You walk along quiet lanes, grassy headlands and coastal paths with sweeping views over Bantry Bay and Dunmanus Bay, never far from the sea.

The journey links small villages such as Glanlough, Kilcrohane and Durrus, crossing the spine of the peninsula and climbing gently onto open ridges with wide ocean views. Along the way you pass lighthouses, old copper mines, standing stones and the ruins of medieval settlements, with time to enjoy local seafood, artisan produce and warm Irish hospitality. It is a rewarding coastal walk that combines scenery, history and a strong sense of place.

Walking distances are moderate, accommodation is in welcoming guesthouses and B&Bs, and each day combines rugged scenery, history and a famously warm Irish welcome.
