Traveller's Tales: Walking the Coast to Coast with Gail Rast

Gail Rast from Australia completed a self-guided Coast to Coast walk with Walkers' Britain & Europe. Here she shares her experience of crossing England on foot, from the Lake District to the North Sea.

What is your walking history?

I have always loved nature and the outdoors, but became really passionate about walking a little over five years ago when I made the decision to walk the Camino Frances. This was fairly ambitious for my first multi-day hike, but I succeeded in walking the entire 800km solo. Since then I have completed a number of multi-day hikes in Australia, including bush camping, and two years ago I walked the Portuguese Coastal Camino (260km).

Why did you choose to walk the Coast to Coast?

I chose the Coast to Coast because I have always wanted to see the Lake District and spend time in the English countryside. Walking is a great way to see and experience new places.

How did you prepare?

I keep fit year-round through swimming, walking and activities like kayaking. In the lead-up to the walk, I increased my walking distances and tackled more difficult terrain, training with a pack. I also incorporated weight training into my routine to strengthen my muscles.

What was your favourite destination along the trail?

I genuinely enjoyed the entire Coast to Coast. I loved the diversity of the terrain throughout. The standout village for me was Osmotherley — such a pretty place, with such friendly locals. I also loved the coastal sections at St Bees and Robin Hood's Bay, which make for a wonderful way to start and finish the walk.

Best food and drink?

The pub food was hearty and more than matched my ravenous appetite at the end of each day. My most memorable meal was braised Cumbrian lamb in a pub in Rosthwaite — plentiful and absolutely delicious. I also enjoyed the local ales, and have since developed a taste for boutique gins.

Biggest surprise?

The biggest surprise was the number and variety of animals sharing the trail. So many different types of sheep and cattle, as well as horses and numerous birds including pheasants and grouse. Walking solo for much of the way, they made for great company.

What did you find most challenging?

The descents in the Lake District were more demanding than I had imagined. I managed the ascents well, but my knees struggled on the way down. The views and sense of achievement made every bit of it absolutely worth it.
