Why Walk the Coast to Coast in September

As with any walk, each season has its own characteristics that makes it stand out from others. Wainwright’s Coast to Coast, one of England’s most iconic routes, is no exception.
Following the long distance route at the beginning of autumn brings with it a range of unique experiences that you cannot have in other months or seasons and will add a special dimension to your trip. So read on and find out why September is a great month to walk the Coast to Coast.

Countless Sheep

John Hodgson

Sheep are unmistakably connected to Cumbria. Along the Coast to Coast you’ll meet lots of them and especially in September you’ll hear their bleating. This is the time when groups of farmers and dogs go out to collect the sheep from the fells, bring them down to the lower fields and sort out which sheep belong to which farmer. It’s a really lively and busy spectacle that only happens twice a year and will definitely add to your experience walking the Coast to Coast in September.

Quieter Trails

Come September and all trails across England start getting less busy and crowded. With the peak summer months behind, most travellers have returned to their daily routine, giving you more chances to have these classic English landscapes all to yourself.

Summer Greens Turn to Autumnal Hues

As the temperatures are getting lower, the colours of the nature change as well. September is the time of year when the autumnal shades begin to show and the landscape changes from green to an array of rustic browns, burnt oranges and golds. There are also beautiful pink flowers along the hiking trails in September, which include Bell heather, red campion, and rose bay willow herb.

Farming Activities

September is a busy time of year for the farmers along the Coast to Coast. You’ll find them ploughing up the lands and sow the winter seedings. Especially in the middle of Wainwright’s walk, there is quite some agriculture that we pass.

Dryer Days

While the landscape in the summer months is often greener, the weather in September tends to be dryer. For walkers on the Coast to Coast this means not only less humidity but also clearer, more expansive views so you can take in the spectacular scenery surrounding you.

Approximately how many ks per day - are there any rest days within the 17 days - who carry luggage?

Walkers' Britain

Hi Kerrie
Good questions! The distance we cover per day depends on the duration of the trip, for the 17-day trip distances range between 12-33km per day, 3.5-9 hours.
None of our guided Coast to Coast trips have rest days, but if you prefer a self guided holiday, we are happy to add those in for you.
Luggage is picked up by our drivers in the morning and is waiting for you at the next accommodation in the late afternoon.
